Cubic Zirconia
What is cubic zirconia?
Cubic zirconia (CZ) is a man-made crystalline material made from zirconium dioxide. It is widely used in jewellery because it can offer a bright, diamond-like appearance at an accessible price.
How does it compare with diamond?
Cubic zirconia is not a diamond. Natural diamonds and lab grown diamonds are both forms of carbon, while cubic zirconia has a different composition and crystal structure. Cubic zirconia generally costs less, but it is also softer than diamond and can become scratched or worn with regular use.
Appearance and sparkle
Cubic zirconia can look very bright, with colourful flashes of light. A stone's cut, cleanliness and setting all influence how it looks when worn.
Where is it used?
It is often chosen for fashion jewellery, occasional wear and designs where an affordable alternative to diamond is preferred.
Caring for cubic zirconia jewellery
Store pieces separately to reduce scratches. Clean gently with mild soapy water and a soft cloth where suitable for the metal and setting. Avoid harsh chemicals, abrasive cleaning and heavy knocks.
